How to repair fire damaged house

Fires can cause immense damage to homes and the people who live in them. The physical destruction that a fire can cause is devastating, but there are steps you can take to repair your home after a fire has occurred. With the right tools, resources, and support, you can begin the process of restoring your house back to its former glory.

Let’s break down how to repair fire damaged houses and where the best support can be found.

Assess the Damage

The first step in repairing a fire damaged home is to assess the damage done. It’s important to be aware of what areas have been affected. This will help you determine what repairs need to be made—and how extensive they might be. Take pictures of the damaged areas, so you have a record for insurance purposes. Make sure all members of your household know which areas are unsafe or off-limits until repairs are complete.

In many cases, the home will be unlivable until the smoke damage is removed (since the smoke damage can be harmful to a person’s health). You’ll likely need to board up and tarp up your home to prevent further damage. A fire damage restoration company can help with this.

Clean Up

Once you’ve assessed the damages, it’s time to start cleaning up! This means discarding any items that cannot be salvaged. This may include furniture and household items that have been destroyed by smoke or water damage from putting out the fire.

You should also remove any debris from inside and outside of your home—this includes burnt wood, ash, debris, etc. Make sure all hazardous materials are disposed of properly according to local regulations.

Cleaning up promptly will help reduce potential health hazards associated with living among debris in a damaged home environment. During this process, remember to wear the appropriate PPE to protect yourself from harmful toxins.

Keep in mind, a professional fire restoration company can also help clean contents that have been damaged by smoke and soot. They usually have access to large industrial equipment that can clean clothes, blankets, rugs, and other items and remove the odor of smoke from them.

Repair & Restore

Now it’s time for the actual repairs! Depending on how severe the fire damage was, you may need professional help for some aspects of this process (e.g., electrical wiring). Otherwise, you may choose to do some repairs yourself (if they don’t require special expertise).

That being said, in most situations, drywall replacement and structural repairs are required. It’s usually safer to contact a turnkey restoration company for this process. You want to make sure that your home is safe and structurally sound moving forward.

Once all the necessary repairs are completed, it’s time to restore your home! This could mean repainting walls or replacing flooring as needed; both will depend on how much damage was done during the fire itself and during clean-up efforts afterwards. Replacing furniture and other household items is also an important part of restoring your home after a fire has occurred. Remember to keep a full inventory of everything you replace, so it’s available for your insurance company if required.

Fire damage can be incredibly destructive; however, there are steps that can be taken to repair your home following an incident like this one! Assess the damage done by taking pictures; clean up debris both inside and outside your house; and then repair & restore whatever needs fixing or replacing (with professional help if necessary).

Can a dryer catch on fire?

1/5/2023 (Permalink)

Dryer in laundry room. Dryer in laundry room.

Can a dryer catch on fire? You bet it can. But unfortunately, many homeowners don't ever think about the potential fire hazard a dryer can pose.

Every year, thousands of house fires start due to dryers—but how do they start and what can you do to avoid dryer fires? Let’s break it down.

Can a dryer catch on fire?

Dryers are one of the most common causes of household fires. This is because lint is an extremely flammable material.

As clothes are dried, small particles of lint become detached from the fabric and accumulate in the lint trap or vent. If these particles build up too much, they can easily catch on fire.

Let’s dig a little deeper into the top causes of dryer fires.

Lint Buildup

Every time you run a load of laundry in the dryer, lint builds up. However, lint is a highly combustible material, and when it builds up in the trap or the vent line, it can create a fire hazard. If you don’t remove the lint after every load of laundry, there is an increased risk that sparks could ignite and cause a fire.

Overheating

Your dryer might also start a fire if it overheats. This usually happens when you have too much clothing in the drum at once, which can obstruct airflow and cause the machine to overheat. This can eventually spark or catch fire.

You should always follow manufacturers recommendations on load size or opt for low heat settings.

Overloading

An overloaded dryer can also pose a risk for starting a fire. This is because too much weight will put extra strain on the dryer’s motor, which could cause it to short circuit or spark out of control. That being said, make sure not to overload your machine with more than what is recommended by the manufacturer. If you need more room for larger items (like comforters), then consider breaking up your dirty laundry into multiple loads – rather than forcing items into one load. This can easily damage the machine and potentially even lead to a house fire.

How to prevent dryer fires

Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to reduce your risk for a dryer-related house fire. These steps include but are not limited to:

  • Clean out the lint trap after every use
  • Clean out any external vents once every 3 months
  • Check for any blockages in vents regularly
  • Make sure you purchase a high-quality dryer that is designed for safety
  • Have your dryer serviced annually by a professional technician
  • Never overload the dryer
  • Clean up any lint around, under, or on top of your dryer

Taking these simple steps can help you keep your dryer working safely and efficiently. Bear in mind – if you ever smell something burning when using your dryer, turn it off immediately and have it checked by a professional before using it again.

No one ever wants their home to be affected by a devastating fire caused by their appliances. That’s why it’s important to be aware of the potential risks associated with using your dryers and take action now to prevent them before they become an issue down the line. By following these tips outlined above, you can reduce your risk of experiencing dryer fire in your home!

6/20/2022 (Permalink)

Heating Safety Tips:

1) Keep anything flammable at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove or a portable space heater.

2) Have a three foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters. Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home. Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.

3) Test smoke alarms monthly. Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer, for fuel. Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.

Fire Safety

5/10/2022 (Permalink)

According to the National Fire Protection Association, firefighters respond to a home fire every 79 seconds.

Simple steps can be taken throughout the home to reduce the risk of fire and injury/loss of life:

Working smoke alarms should be found in each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the building are working properly and the batteries are good?

Be sure fire extinguishers are available on every level of the home and that each household member knows how to use them?

Reduce the risk of fire outside of the home by removing dying or dead trees and shrubs and by keeping dry brush and debris at least 30 feet away from the home.

Keep gutters, roof, and eaves clear of debris? Be sure any candles in the home are placed away from curtains and other furniture, as well as out of reach of children and pets.

Consider using safer alternatives such as flameless candles.

Candle Safety

2/21/2022 (Permalink)

Candle Burning Safety
Here are a 10 tips to keep your home safe from candle use.
  1. Young children should be taught to stay away from lit candles. Keep lit candles out of reach of children and pets. Candle lighting is not an appropriate activity for small children, so keep all matches and lighters out of the sight and reach of children. Older children can learn to use them under adult supervision.
  2. Burn candles away from drafts, other heat sources, and all flammable objects or materials. In other words, never use candles near windows or exits.
  3. Keep burning candles away from curtains, wrapping paper, combustible decorations and displays, flammable liquids, and aerosol sprays, such as hair spray, which can explode. Never allow a candle flame to touch any glass surface. Don't burn candles more than four hours at a time.
  4. Unattended candles are an invitation to disaster; so don't forget to snuff out candles before leaving the room or going to bed. Blowing candles out doesn't do the trick: Extinguish them by wetting the wick. Here are some tips for burning candles safely:
  5. Candles other than jar candles must be used in an appropriate non-tipping, non-flammable holder. Make sure that candle containers and holders are made from tempered glass or have a proper glaze. All candles should be placed on a safe, heat-resistant dry surface. If possible, place glass chimneys or shades over them. For Christmas luminaires, use 15-hour votive candles in holders, placed in paper bags filled with at least 2 inches of sand. The candle must be of a size that will allow adequate space between the candles and bag so as not to ignite the bag.
  6. Remove labels and tags from candles before burning.
  7. Keep wicks trimmed to ¼ inch at all times. This inhibits smoking and carbon build-up at the tip of the wicks and provides a cleaner burn.
  8. Sometimes a layer of liquid wax forms that causes the wick to fall to the side. To maintain an even burn, keep the wick centered. This will also protect the candleholder, since a flame that's too close for too long may crack the holder.
  9. Keep the wax pool free of foreign objects such as wick trimmings and matches. They will interfere with proper burning and are flammable.
  10. Extinguish taper or pillar candles when they get within 2 inches of their holders. Discontinue use of containers candle when ½" of wax remains.

Fire safety in your home

3/1/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Sherman/Denison is here to help! Please call us at 903-893-7166 for a free estimate.

Emergency Board Up and Roof Tarping

A few tips from your local SERVPRO:

Did you know that some insurance companies deny at least part of a fire insurance claim if it finds that a property owner did not try to protect their property from secondary damage?  This can be avoided by allowing our in staff contractor to do emergency board up and roof tarping.

After most fire damages, many properties experience damaged roofs, windows, doors, and even damaged outer walls.  This type of damage makes a building susceptible to secondary damage. Weather can come in and cause water damage and mold.

Easy access also makes it easy for theft to occur.

For these reasons, we recommend emergency fire damage services as soon as the fire department has left.  We can:

  • Attach a weatherproof roof tarp.
  • Board up damaged doors, windows, and outer walls.
  • Provide the rebuilding for construction
  • Send a security guard to protect your property 24 hours a day.

After your property is secure, we can inspect your property and begin fire damage cleanup and remediation services as well as the rebuilding of your property.

Safety for burning candles

2/3/2021 (Permalink)

Fire or Smoke damage to your property? We have you covered

We are always here to help you and your family.

Safety Tips to keep warm for your home

1/8/2019 (Permalink)

FIREWORKS Landing on your roof could cause a FIRE?

7/5/2018 (Permalink)

It has happened plenty of times... especially when there is debris in the gutters, like dried leaves and twigs. Just because it is an asphalt roof shingle, doesn't mean it won't catch fire... just think... what is asphalt? It is a petroleum based product, on a hot roof, and if it then comes in contact with sparks from a firework, you potentially have a problem.

Fireworks were also banned in central Texas this year due to the extremely dry/drought conditions. 72% of Texas is in the highest drought category this year.... whew! Most of the area cities also cancelled their public firework displays due to the extreme fire danger. If a FIRE strikes your home call the professionals SERVPRO of Sherman/Denison 903-893-7166

According to the National Fire Protection Association, firefighters respond to a home fire every 79 seconds.

Simple steps can be taken throughout the home to reduce the risk of fire and injury/loss of life:?

Working smoke alarms should be found in each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the property are working properly and the batteries are good?

Be sure fire extinguishers are available on every level of the home and that each household member knows how to use them?

Reduce the risk of fire outside of the home by removing dying or dead trees and shrubs and by keeping dry brush and debris at least 30 feet away from the home.

Keep gutters, roof, and eaves clear of debris? Be sure any candles in the home are placed away from curtains and other furniture, as well as out of reach of children and pets. Consider using safer alternatives such as flameless candles.

Candle Burning Safety

2/7/2018 (Permalink)

Preventing Spontaneous Combustion of Oil Soaked Rags

12/22/2017 (Permalink)

Fire in Garage due to DIY project

Rags are the most common type of Spontaneous Combustion fires. Most are caused by improperly disposed of oil and stain soaked rags.

Examples of these products are oil-based paints and stains, teak and linseed oils, varnishes and polyurethane, paint thinners, etc. Spontaneous combustion of oily rags occurs when rag or cloth is slowly heated to its ignition point through oxidation. A substance will begin to release heat as it oxidizes. If this heat has no way to escape, like in a pile, the temperature will raise to a level high enough to ignite the oil and ignite the rag or cloth.

The fire from this can spread quickly to other combustibles and cause great damage to your home or property. Prevention of spontaneous combustion fires begins with good housekeeping.

A clean work area can prevent a fire from spreading and getting bigger by not allowing the fire fuel to burn. Also understanding the potential for self-heating of rags soiled with oils such as linseed oil and turpentine is a key step in eliminating these preventable fires. To properly and safely dispose of oily rags, Bend Fire Department recommends the following steps:

1 Use a container with a tight fitting lid. A metal can is preferable but a plastic can or zip lock bag can work if nothing else is available.

2 Place soiled and used rags inside and then fill the rest the way with water, seal the top and do not open it. This will prevent the oils from oxidizing, and thus keeping the rags from heating up and igniting.

3 Contact your local garbage disposal company for their policy on disposal of the can and contents. Some companies will permit disposal in regular household trash.

Kitchen Caution Stay Safe This Holiday Season

12/13/2017 (Permalink)

Kitchen stove fire

Each holiday, families gather to celebrate  by preparing a delicious feast, but if you don’t practice safe cooking habits, your holiday could become hazardous very quickly. According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home injuries. The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking. It’s important to be alert to prevent cooking fires. Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol don’t use the stove or stovetop. Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, boiling, or broiling food.  If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the kitchen while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.  Keep anything that can catch fire—oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels, or curtains—away from the stovetop. If you have a cooking fire, consider the following safety protocols to help keep you and your family safe.  Just get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire. Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number after you leave.  For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.  If you try to fight the fire, be sure others are getting out and you have a clear way out. Keep a lid nearby when you’re cooking to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.
