Storm Damage to your Sherman/Denison Home or Business

8/2/2021 (Permalink)

Here are a few Flood Facts provided by FEMA:

Flash floods can bring walls of water from 10 to 20 feet high.

Flooding can be caused by spring thawing (snow and frozen grounds melting in the spring), heavy rains, snow melt runoffs, flash floods, and mudflows.

Floods are the most widespread natural disaster aside from wildfires.

A 2,000 square foot home undergoing 12 feet of water damage could cost more than $50,000 to repair.

Here are a few supplies you need to prepare for a flood:

Stock up on First Aid items

Non-perishable foods

Three gallons of water per person for 3 days

Battery operated radio for weather reports

Extra batteries

Personal hygiene necessities

Cleaning Up After a Storm in Your Westerly Property

Storm loss emergencies can have disastrous effects on your home or commercial property here in Westerly, making it vital to not only secure restoration professionals but also a team of qualified contractors that can help with repairs and reconstruction. Our SERVPRO team can help in both of these areas with a full-service approach ranging from assessment and mitigation to restoration and rebuilding. We can make it "Like it never even happened."

Structural Damages Caused by Storms

The Sherman/Denison area has been known to suffer some severe weather situations. While some of these systems have been large enough to cover the entire state at once, they can also arrive with a violent force that can damage roofs, siding, windows, and more. High winds can knock down trees and smaller structures, and these situations can also have a damaging effect on the main house. Our professionals can help with temporary construction solutions like roof tarping and board up that prevent flood water penetration and seal up unnatural openings to the outside.

Preparing for The Next Storm

2/5/2020 (Permalink)

One of the most important reasons to prepare for emergencies is so that quick, informed decisions can be made in the midst of crisis.

Having Plans in place minimizes fear and confusion, and can ultimately save lives.

PLAN

Know what threats are in your area and plan for situations that may result, should they affect you.

Consider being stuck in your home or what to do if immediate evacuation is necessary.

PREPARE

Assemble GO KITS to be kept in your home and cars to ensure you have provisions and tools you may need to survive or treat injuries.

Take any action necessary, based on your plans that would make your response easier and faster for you and your family.

Make sure family members can turn off utilities if necessary.

PRACTICE

Going through the motions will reinforce actions that each individual should take and help them be clear minded and calm.

It's that time of the year for Summer Rain Storms

7/15/2019 (Permalink)

While the spring season is known for the potential to experience severe weather, the threat exists throughout the summer months as well.

In fact, the potential for severe weather even increases in some areas. Hurricane season in the Atlantic begins June 1st and runs through November 30th. The Eastern Pacific hurricane season begins May 15th also ending November 30th.

BEFORE THE STORM

• Build an emergency supply kit and develop a communication plan.

• Unplug any electronic equipment before the storm arrives.

• Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.

• If you are outdoors, get inside a building, home or hard top vehicle (not a convertible).

• Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.

DURING THE STORM

• Use your battery-operated NOAA Weather Radio for updates from local officials.

• Avoid contact with corded phones. Cordless and cellular phones are safe to use.

• Unplug appliances and other electrical items, such as computers. Power surges from lightning can cause serious damage.

• Avoid contact with electrical equipment or cords.

• Avoid contact with plumbing. Plumbing and bathroom fixtures can conduct electricity.

• Stay away from windows and doors.

AFTER THE STORM

• Never drive through a flooded roadway.

• Stay away from storm-damaged areas to keep from putting yourself at risk.

• Stay away from downed power lines and report them immediately. While it may be difficult to prepare for the unpredictable, there are steps you can take now to help ensure you are ready when disaster strikes.

One way to prepare your home or business for any type of disaster, is to establish an Emergency READY Profile® (ERP). The ERP is free of charge and will prepare you for any upcoming storm or water damage to your home or business.

Storms that occur in Sherman/Denison

2/14/2019 (Permalink)

Storms in North Texas can pop up at any time mostly when you least expect them.  When the storms hit and it rains for days or rains a lot in a few hours run off is the main concern.

Run off can cause immediate flooding which can intrude your home or business. Water will usually enter through the foundation or windows and doors. When this occurs the water is now considered dirty water due  to the fact that there is unknown contaminants in the water. If this water intrudes your home or business all of the flooring and contents would need to be disposed of due to containimation.

SERVPRO of Sherman/Denison has the experienced Technicians to walk you through this type of disaster. Our crews are IICRC and ADS trained and certified.

Each year Storms can hit all over the United States you must be STORM Ready.

Winter storms can range from a moderate snow over a few hours to a blizzard with blinding, winddriven snow that lasts for several days.

Some winter storms are large enough to affect several states, while others affect only a single community.

Many winter storms are accompanied by dangerously low temperatures and sometimes by strong winds, icing, sleet and freezing rain.

Here are some tips to stay warm:

 * Dress in several layers of lightweight clothing, wear mittens and a hat (preferably one that covers your ears).

* Wear waterproof, insulated boots to keep your feet warm and dry and to maintain your footing in ice and snow.

* Minimize travel. If travel is necessary, keep a disaster supplies kit in your vehicle.

* Listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or other local news channels for critical information from the National Weather Service (NWS).

* Winterize your vehicle and keep the gas tank full. A full tank will keep the fuel line from freezing.

* Insulate your home by installing storm windows or covering windows with plastic from the inside to keep cold air out.

*Maintain heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected every year.

*Bring pets/companion animals inside during winter weather. Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas with non-frozen drinking water.

*Running water, even at a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing.

* All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside and kept clear. Cold-Related Emergencies

* Frostbite and hypothermia are two dangerous and potentially life-threatening emergencies. Learn how to care for these emergencies by taking a first aid class.

* Go to a designated public shelter if your home loses power or heat during periods of extreme cold.

* Avoid driving when conditions include sleet, freezing rain or drizzle, snow or dense fog. *

Before tackling strenuous tasks in cold temperatures, consider your physical condition, the weather factors and the nature of the task. * Protect yourself from frostbite and hypothermia by wearing warm, loose-fitting, lightweight clothing in several layers. Stay indoors, if possible.

* Help people who require special assistance such as elderly people living alone, people with disabilities and children.

* Check on your animals and make sure that their access to food and water is not blocked by snow drifts, ice or other obstacles. If possible, bring them indoors. Caution: Carbon Monoxide Kills * Never use a generator, grill, camp stove or other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal-burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace or any partially enclosed area. Locate unit away from doors, windows and vents that could allow carbon monoxide to come indoors.

* The primary hazards to avoid when using alternate sources for electricity, heating or cooking are carbon monoxide poisoning, electric shock and fire.

* Install carbon monoxide alarms in central locations on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas to provide early warning of accumulating carbon monoxide.

* If the carbon monoxide alarm sounds, move quickly to a fresh air location outdoors or by an open window or door.

* Call for help from the fresh air location and remain there until emergency personnel arrive to assist you.

The Worries of Winter Weather and Storm Damage

1/10/2018 (Permalink)

Winter weather can bring about more issues than just slippery roads and a sidewalk to shovel. If you live where temperatures sink below freezing level, you are also at risk for frozen pipes and ice dams, which can create a major disaster at your home or property.

FROZEN PIPES

Frozen pipes are often those exposed to the cold weather, such as those outside your house, or in cold areas such as basements, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets. A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the backflow pressure between the water source and the blockage. A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly. To prevent pipes from freezing, here are a few steps you can take, according to The American Red Cross:

Be sure to completely drain water from swimming pool and sprinkler lines, as well as outside hoses. n Open kitchen cabinets to let warm air near the plumbing.

When the weather is extremely cold, let water drip from faucets that may come from exposed pipes.  Keep your heat set to the same temperature both day and night.

ICE DAMS

Ice dams can be a little-known, but major problem during the snowy season. They form when heated air melts roof snow downward into water dammed behind still-frozen ice. When the trapped water cannot safely flow or run into the gutter system, it can backflow under the roof ’s shingles and into the structure’s interior areas, as well as causing gutters and shingles to move or fall. Icicles can be an initial sign of an ice dam, according to Travelers.com. To spot ice dams inside, “check for water stains or moisture in your attic or along the ceiling of exterior walls of your house. Water stains or moisture may be an indication that an ice dam has formed and water has penetrated the roof membrane.” Removing an ice dam as soon as it is found is vital to helping prevent damage to your property and can be done using heated cables, a roof shovel, or calcium chloride ice melter. If winter weather causes water damage to your property,  SERVPRO of SHerman/Denison are only a call away, 24/7, ready to restore to preloss condition.

Being Prepared for Tsunamis

12/18/2017 (Permalink)

BE PREPARED:

Tsunamis- Why take the risk?

Did you know tsunamis can hit any U.S. coast?

While Tsunamis are more likely to hit states on the Pacific coastline or in the Caribbean, it is good to know what to do if a tsunami does strike where you live, or even where you may vacation.

Ready.gov says “tsunamis, also known as seismic sea waves (mistakenly called “tidal waves”), are a series of enormous waves created by an underwater disturbance such as an earthquake, landslide, volcanic eruption, or meteorite.” Areas within a mile of the coast and less than 25 feet above sea level have a greater risk of being hit.

As with any emergency, be sure you have a plan.

Know the evacuation plan and move inland or to higher ground and avoid the beach. “The first wave may not be the last or the largest,”

For more information on preparing for a tsunami, visit ready.gov/tsunamis.

Are you Winter Weather Ready?

12/8/2017 (Permalink)

Are you prepared for the coming cold weather?

Cold weather can have a huge impact on your home or business if you are not ready for it. From heavy rain and freezing temperatures to damaging wind, sleet, or snow, all can cause serious and costly damage.

While you cannot control the weather, you can take the steps to be prepared and help take the sting out of winter weather.

To help prevent costly damages due to weather consider taking the following precautions to protect your property.

* Check your property for downed tree limbs.

*Roofs, water pipes and gutters should be inspected to ensure they are in proper order.

*Inspect property for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazards.

*Inspect all handrails, stairwells, and entry ways to address slippery conditions.
